AllGood Stays Comfy and DaLat Stays Open, But Snuffer's Is About To Become Pat's.
Welcome to The Spread, our weekly feature that aims to share all the area restaurant, food and beverage industry news that's fit to print. Except, this is the Internet, so space isn't a concern. Also: Good thing, because this is Dallas and this town always has breaking restaurant news going down like whoa.
The holidays are around the corner and cold fronts coupled with heavy precipitation are moving in, meaning that the general consensus among food lovers in Dallas is that it's a fine time for some comfort food. And, if you're looking for warm, hearty and filling dishes, there are plenty of places in Dallas to get your fix.
In fact, one of the best places to quell your comfort food craving in the entire country can be found right here in our own backyard — at least according to USA Today which called out the chicken-fried steak at AllGood Cafe as one of the nation's best in its list of “10 Great Places for Comfort Food.” Although the dish is simple and relatively inexpensive to make, AllGood's has been called out numerous times as being the best version in Dallas.
Those looking towards the more exotic end of the spectrum can find solace in a steaming bowl of pho from DaLat. Even with all the talk surrounding the possibility of a temporary shutdown of the Sriracha factory, DaLat's one place that North Texans won't have to worry about being affected by the potential shortage of the popular sauce; recently, the restaurant accumulated a year's supply of the good stuff so patrons can breathe a collective sigh of relief (at least for another year). The restaurant has also received a string of requests to stay open New Year's Day in order to help fight off impending hangovers after an informal petition on Meanwhile, the chefs at the so-so Tanoshii Ramen are rolling out a new ramen bowl tailored for the winter weather. Tan Tan Men is comprised of an array of flavors such as sesame paste, garlic, ginger and spicy ground pork, and will be the featured bowl at the Deep Ellum spot throughout the week.
Speaking of pork, Baker's Ribs BBQ has opened another new location in Dallas. Fans of the restaurant's infamous ribs and fried pies can now get their fix at the local chain's new Northwest Highway location, which can be found near the intersection of Abrams Road.
And speaking of chains: The Snuffer's team is experiencing some changes of its own. When the OG location on Greenville Avenue re-opens in the near future, it will do so under the name of There's also been some recent good news on the craft beer front: Deep Ellum will soon play host to BrainDead Brewing, a locally owned brewpub that's set to open next year. The craft beer powerhouses responsible for the endeavor are Sam Wynne (of Fort Worth's Rodeo Goat), Drew Huerter (former brewmaster at Deep Ellum Brewing Co.) and Jeff Fryman (cicerone from Common Table). The brewpub will feature some 40 taps consisting of seasonal beers, special editions and craft beers, plus growlers for customers to take home, as well as a small menu of snacks to enjoy onsite.
City Tavern, meanwhile, has recently completely revamped its tap system. Whereas the popular Downtown Dallas haunt previously only boasted 10 on-tap offerings, that number has now jumped to 28. Boasts owner Josh Florence: “We have a ton of local choices now — and hands down have the best selection in Downtown proper.”
Finally, in opening news: Hypnotic Donuts plans to open a second location in Denton in January; Liberty Burger officially opened its third location in Lakewood; Crisp Salad Company announced an opening date for its Lower Greenville location on December 4; the folks behind Tanoshii Ramen opened another Asian-themed restaurant called Miss Chi Vietnamese last Wednesday; The Blind Butcher plans to open by the end of 2013 on Lower Greenville; Lone Star Attitude Burger has finally officially opened in Denton; and Samson's Gourmet Hot Dogs opened on Oak Lawn Avenue.
