Go Home With Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.
Because all is peaceful in the world right now, nobody was murdered yesterday, and absolutely every country is acting all buddy-buddy at the moment, yesterday's leading news item on nearly national outlet was the fact that Bill Nye “The Science Guy” would be joining the next season of Dancing With the Stars.
Yup.
I guess we can take this as a sign that it's OK to go out and party. To live it up. To celebrate the fact that, for once, all is right in this life.
There's certainly no shortage of options to choose from tonight.
Willy Mason at Good Records
Sure, this free in-store from singer-songwriter Willy Masons starts pretty early on in the evening, but there's good reason for that: The onetime Conor Oberst protege will be opening the Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros show at South Side Ballroom later on in the night. Of the two performances, though, it's pretty easy to guess which one will have exponentially better sightlines. — Cory Graves
AT&T Patio Sessions with Chris Johnson and Madison King at Sammons Park
Telegraph Canyon frontman Chris Johnson heads this installment of AT&T Performing Arts Center's seasonal Thursday evening series at Sammons Park. Unseasonably hot temperatures be damned, the free admission and food trucks galore sound like good reasons enough to bring the family out to this one. — Stephen Young
Ray Wylie Hubbard (Live Album Recording) at Kessler Theater
Oklahoma country artist/legend (and one-time Oak Cliff resident) Ray Wylie Hubbard is going to be at the Kessler tonight, doing what he does best and making everyone swoon to his country guitar strums and bluesy vocals. — Trace McCaslin
Animal House Quote Along and Toga Party at Alamo Drafthouse
You've seen the '78 John Landis classic a thousand times, but have you ever seen it while wearing a toga? Throw on your best re-purposed bed sheet and shout along to the movie with a bunch of your drunk buddies. Also at the theater tonight will be representatives from Community Beer Company, who'll be handing out free samples and making sure you're nice and lubed up for the night's proceedings. — CG
Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 at Three Links
The New Zealand-based outfit has found a way to marry the sleazed-up sounds of '70s rock with the rockabilly/burlesque sensibilities of sexually ferocious frontwoman Labretta Suede. Local funk-punks Black Dotz and the Mick Jagger disciples Sir Name & The Janes open. — CG
Red Bull Panamerika's Wazzap Tour at Trees
According to their website, Red Bull Panamerika is “a weekly radio show and a blog… focused on promoting the best of alternative music and musical expressions from Latin American cultures around the globe.” As part of a five-city tour, this partnership brings the Mexico City-based DJ Mexican Institute of Sound to Deep Ellum for a show. For the past decade MIS has explored ways to fuse elements of Cumbia and other aspects of Latin culture into mainstream dance tracks. Los Master Plus opens. — CG
Free Week at Rubber Gloves
The week-long, free Denton music sampler platter continues at Gloves. Tonight, though, the lineup takes a turn toward the avant garde as Eat Avery's Bones, Bitch Teeth, Violent Squid and Orgullo Primitivo all perform. If incoming UNT/TWU students have learned nothing else about Denton's music scene during this year's Free Week festivities, they've no doubt caught on to just how diverse the bands in this town really are. — CG
