Killtron Kicks Off Our Exclusive Summer Mix Series.
As part of the Guide to Summer package we're rolling out on the site all week long, we asked a number of the city's top DJs to shoot us summer-themed mixes. Y'know, just to help get the juices going. The first in the series features DJ Killtron.
We first met Killtron back in the halcyon days of Fallout Lounge (RIP), but the dude born Joel Trujillo's party-starting DJ origin story actually begins some time before that — back in 2005, when he lied about his age to get into the club in which he was supposed to perform.
He's come a long way since sneaking into venues, that's for sure.
These days, you can find Killtron spinning at various underground bashes or, starting this summer, in the quite-above-ground confines of Tate's over on McKinney Avenue, where he'll now be holding down the musical fort every Saturday night as part of his newest residency. And, let's be clear, Killtron's excited about the change of place afforded him by his new weekly.
“Small place, fucking delicious cocktails,” he offers matter-of-factly of the offering at Tate's. “[It's an] ultimately chill and not a popped collar rager. I spin a lot of different genres — nu-disco, house, dancehall, hip-hop, club and a little cumbia when I can. Just good grooves all night.”
Said grooves helped inspire this new mix, too.
“The vibes are somewhere in the middle,” Killtron says. “Not yet full summer rage mode, but a step or two beyond poolside lounging mode. It's got some big names on it. This is probably the most accessible mix I've ever made.”
A word to the wise: Don't let Killtron's “accessible” warning phase you; his mix, which you can check out below, is every bit as schizophrenic and energetic as Killtron's tastes have always implied. And that's good news heading into the summer.
“Summer means coming alive at night because the sun is too cruel during the day,” Killtron says. “Everyone looks great during the summer, too, because they're outside more and they're full of the energy the sun gives them. It just means more.”
