Scenes from Friday Night's Man or Astro-Man? Show at Club Dada.

Astronaut suits, seizure-inducing light shows, touchscreen guitars and theremins awaited the crowd that gathered on Friday night for an evening of futuristic surf-punk at Dada.

But even that barrage seemed somewhat low-key considering Man or Astro-man's past. The Alabama-based (by way of deep space) Man or Astro Man? has a reputation for employing Tesla coils to propel lightning bolts above the heads of attendees at shows. Friday night's Dallas didn't see any of that, unfortunately.

Still, the crowd was nonetheless treated to a paralyzing lights-and-visuals show accompanied by the kind of fast and furious sounds that Dick Dale might pen were he stuck in the 1960s version of Lost in Space.

And the mostly lyric-less set — interrupted by the frequent rants of drummer Brian Teasley, who goes by the stagename “Birdstuff” — had the crowd in an enthralled tizzy throughout its run.

The visual spectacle was surely a part of the equation, though. Bassist Rob Del Bueno (a.k.a. “Coco the Electronic Monkey Wizard”) and his touchscreen bass guitar provided an especially impressive visual. That piece of gear was cast aside — and then lost, and then retrieved, eventually — during the last song of the set, as Coco lifted a theremin above the crowd and invited their raised hands to join in on the musical experience.

And thus ending the set, which suddenly ended at midnight with no encore. It was unusual, maybe. But it was unusually amazing, too.

Earlier in the evening, local surf-punk outfit Sealion and area alt-rock mainstays the Deathray Davies performed equally fasts that set the tone nicely for the night.
