Scenes From Peter Murphy's Bauhaus Anniversary Show at the Granada Theater.

Back in March, legendary goth vocalist Peter Murphy was arrested on DUI charges in Greater Los Angeles. But with a tour on the books — and a tour in celebration of the 35th anniversary of his seminal Bauhaus band's 1978 formation — Murphy has hit the road regardless.

And, for but a brief moment during his stop last night at the Granada Theater, where he and his band performed on a bill alongside Austin's My Jerusalem, he seemed primed to address his recent issues.

“Everybody fucks up sometimes,” Murphy told his mostly adoring crowd.

Then one particularly inebriated fan ruined any chance of expansion, by shouting out at Murphy that he should “Fuck off.”

People, man.

To Murphy's credit, that sole crap moment didn't ruin his display, which was strong, despite the fact that, clearly, the offering would've been improved were this an all-out Bauhaus show with guitarist Daniel Ash and the rest of the gang on board instead of this capable, if mostly anonymous, group of backing players Murphy brought along for the ride.

Still, it was good to hear the songs, and, as Murphy would note a few times throughout the set, it was very much the songs that were the focus of this show. And he seemed sincere when he said that.

Far more important, though: Murphy's voice, which is still there, still sounding great, in all its Gothic glory.

It was a great performance in that regard — and in others, too. Murphy's clearly a seasoned stage performer, and his bag of tricks is full of stock poses, brooding energy and an incomparable swagger.

I'll tell you one more thing about that swagger, too.

Few guys can pull of a half-buttoned shirt. But Peter Murphy is obviously one of those few. See what I mean below.
