A Look at This Week's New and Specialty Film Releases Around Town.

Oblivion.
Director:
Joseph Kosinski.
Writers: Joseph Kosinski, Karl Gajdusek.
Cast: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko.
Where's it playing? Various Metroplex megaplexes.

Here, Tom cruises into a universe where Earth has been deserted and the world is simply being mined for its remaining resources. But he soon begins to question his mission and all that he knows. So, Scientology: The Movie?

To The Wonder.
Director:
Terrence Malick.
Writer: Terrence Malick.
Cast: Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams.
Where's it playing? Angelika Dallas and Angelika Plano.

Typically, we have to wait decades between Terrence Malick films. But it's only been two years since we got The Tree of Life from the reticent auteur. Word has it that Malick's been on a bit of a hot streak of late, though, working on various projects at once, including whatever it is he's on that has found him filming Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale at various Austin music festivals in recent years. This, however, is not that film. It's something else entirely starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams as a couple whose marriage is tested after they visit Oklahoma. [Insert easy joke about Oklahoma here.] Will there be hands gracefully grazing fields of wheat? Will we see the sun shining through the trees? Yes, of course we will.

The Manson Family (2003).
Director:
Jim Van Bebber.
Writer: Jim Van Bebber.
Cast: Marcelo Games, Marc Pitman, Leslie Orr.
Where's it playing? Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, at Midnight at the Inwood Theatre!

In this notorious independent retelling of the nefarious The Manson Family murders, the director directed naked, the cast performed actual oral sex on film, prostitutes were hired as stars and marijuana was openly smoked on and off set — and despite all this, the film was not banned, not in any country. So who knows what could happen at this midnight showing?

The cult movie sensation that birthed the term “Lynchian” is back in surrealistic 35mm, the way it was always intended to be seen! After Friday night's screening, the theater will play host to an after-party featuring Jukebox Mafia and “a very special surprise guest.” Could it be Lynch himself? Probably not, but who knows?
