If you drive past the square in Denton, you might miss the quaint Loco Cafe, which is situated across the street from its bigger, more locally famous sibling, The Green House.
But you should make a point not to miss it: Since opening back in May of 2011, this small breakfast and lunch spot has attracted a fair amount of regulars. And with a popular menu and a delicious offering of monthly specials, it's easy to see why.
Loco Cafe prides itself on fresh fare and healthy portions at a reasonable price, all of which is made painfully clear with their “Loco Moco” dish. Perfectly cooked hash browns topped with eggs (cooked however you like), cheddar and jack cheese, and homemade salsa or gravy gets served with a freshly baked buttermilk biscuit for — all for under $7, which is quite a deal.
But dare we make it better with a side of bacon and grilled avocado? Yes. Yes, we do — at a small cost of course. You can't really complain about the extra charge, though, when the massive meal is sure to keep you satisfied for at least the next seven or eight hours.
As a whole, the entire menu is an eclectic mix of tried-and-true items, with a sprinkling of new takes on traditional Mexican breakfasts. You'll find flapjacks, biscuits and gravy, French toast (with optional cinnamon apples), migas and huevos rancheros served here, in addition to the list of lunch items.
Also worth noting is their monthly artisan breakfast pizza and a rotating pastry offering, which has seen dozens of pie incarnations such as coconut cream, Dutch apple, sour cream and cherry, and, of course, key lime. Oh, and their cinnamon rolls are roughly about the size of your face.
And lest we forget: Their insanely delicious coffees and shaken iced teas truly are the nectar of the gods.
This place is quickly becoming a go-to breakfast spot in Denton and, with a few minor adjustments to their egg cooking (our poached eggs were a little overcooked, our only complaint), they could possibly edge out their competition.
It's crazy how fast the breakfast game can change, huh? Almost loco, even.
