A Dallas Ice Cream Shop Will Soon Unveil A New Ice Cream Sundae In A Taco. Because Duh.
Tacos are awesome. Everyone loves them.
Crispy-shelled, soft-shelled, puffy-shelled, Doritos-powder-encrusted-shelled — it doesn't really matter. We all dig them, and we dig them all. At this point, it's common knowledge that most any meal can be improved when placed within a tortilla casing; breakfast proved that much a long time ago.
So it should come as little surprise, then, that Pokey O's, the Park Cities Plaza cookies and ice cream shop (located at 3034 Mockingbird Lane near the Central Expressway intersection), is now gearing up to unveil yet another taco innovation/abomination/appropriation in the coming weeks.
Starting in May, Pokey O's will be adding an ice cream taco to its menu.
Yes, that would be a dessert taco.
According to a publicist for Pokey O's, the offering will consist, as one might expect, of “a sundae nestled in a taco-shaped waffle cone.” The waffle cone/shell will come in a variety of flavors, and patrons can choose the ice cream flavors and toppings they want to go inside.
This, of course, isn't exactly a new concept (Choco Taco, anyone?), but Pokey O's' offering promises to be a little less, uh, pre-packaged and perhaps more gourmet than past offerings of this ilk.
And yet: Is that enough to make this ice cream taco item a draw for the shop? Are we, as a culture, so obsessed with all things taco-related that we'll eat anything served in taco form?
We're inclined to say yes, begrudgingly, with our eyes rolling incessantly and our mouths somewhat watering.
Still, we just now reached out to Pokey O's owner Kathy Oszustowicz, mastermind of the idea, to ask these questions and to try, if we might, to determine the inspiration behind her concept. She wasn't available; she's on vacation, the employee we spoke with said before telling us that he didn't too feel comfortable talking on the subject without her blessing.
I guess we'll have to wait for May 1, when the ice cream taco treat is slated to makes its soft debut at the shop, to answer these important concerns.
Until then, I assume we'll all just be keeping an ear out for our neighborhood ice cream cart man's bell to ring so we can recall the greatness of the Choco Taco. C'mon, admit it, you love those things.
I mean, it's ice cream. In a taco. What's not to like?
Update at 4:15 p.m.: Not really a correction, so to speak, but our old pal and taco sensei Jose Ralat-Maldonado checks in to let us know that Pokey O's is hardly the first North Texas spot to offer dessert tacos of some sort.
