Check Out The New Single From The Gritz Featuring Snoop Dogg and Raheem Devaughn.
Speaking of new and noteworthy local single releases: Yesterday, just before opening for Erykah Badu at her Granada Theater-hosted birthday celebration, The Gritz released the latest single from their long-time-coming debut album, and they brought along some pretty heavy hitters with them here, too. The song, a breezy R&B jaunt called “That Kinda Girl,” features guest vocals from both Snoop Dogg and Raheem DeVaughn, both of whom have significant ties to The Gritz.
When he’s in town, for instance, DeVaughn is a pretty regular guest at The Gritz’s weekly residency at the Prophet Bar on Wednesday nights (one of two such weeklies the Gritz hold, the other being on Sunday nights at Sandaga 813). Gritz bandleader RC Williams also goes back a ways with Snoop: When not serving as Badu’s live band director, Williams sometimes serves that same role for Snoop’s touring outfits.
So, yeah, the Gritz definitely called in some favors on this one, and it works out for the song’s benefit — Snoop’s opening verse about falling for a Texas gal is pretty great and DeVaughn’s song-ending vocal lilts make for a nice touch, too.
Tonight at their regular Prophet Bar gig, the Gritz will celebrate the new track, which you can stream below. Although you shouldn’t expect DeVaughn or Snoop to show up at this one, it’s still possible that you could hear this song performed live in the near future. Snoop, as you should know, will headline the Observer‘s March 16 St. Patrick’s Day concert on a bill also featuring local favorites A.Dd+ and Ishi.
