Shake Your Booty With Black Joe Lewis in Denton.
Just so you know: New Girl — the funniest show on TV right now, for real — is taking a week off tonight.
That means you don't have to wait for Nick and Jess go all “will they or won't they” or hear Schmidt say hilariously douchey things before you hit the town this evening. You can get just straight to it.
And — good news! — there's plenty going on for you to take advantage of this evening. For starters, there's another edition of Oral Fixation is going down. Meanwhile, up in Denton, Black Joe Lewis is sure to pack the house and, subsequently, bring it down. Also, per usual, the Texas Theatre is screening a dope movie. And, not necessarily per usual, there's a Tony award-winning musical going on in Fort Worth.
In other words: There's plenty of fun to be had tonight. Go ahead and get to it.
Black Joe Lewis at Rubber Gloves
Black Joe Lewis? There are a lot of blues- and funk-indebted acts out of Austin these days, but there ain't many like him and his Honeybears. Catch them at Rubber Gloves Recording Studios with local buzzing punk outfit The Atomic Tanlines serving as the opener. Prepare to have your face melted off.
Oral Fixation at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary
At this event, seven Dallasites will orate personally written tales relating to the theme of the night. Some are funny, some are sad and, yes, from time to time it can get just plain weird. Tonight, the theme is “Playing the Field.” Expect tales of athletics and romance alike.
Memphis at Bass Performance Hall
This musical tells the loosely truth-based tale of a white radio DJ who played black music and that of a black singer ready for her big break. Thinking that means racial tension? You'd be right: This is basically a family-friendly version of just how racist people used to be in the South. Also, it won the 2010 Best Musical award at the Tonys.
John Dies At The End at The Texas Theatre
This indie comedy-horror flick adapted from a now out-of-print novel has garnered a lot of attention — and mostly for how uniquely bizarre it is. The premise: There's a new drug on the street called soy sauce and it gives its users an out-of-body experience — only, uh, some of its users don't come back human, so John and his buddy David have to save mankind. Wanna bet on what happens to John's character in the end?
Cowboy Mouth at the House of Blues
Cowboy Mouth is an energetic rock outfit from New Orleans, and yet they're spending Fat Tuesday here in Dallas. Since they won't be spending the day in their home city, they'll be sure to bring some of the festive energy or way. Throw beads at them while they're performing on stage to really make them feel at home.
Phat Tuesday with DJs Sober, A1 and Phooka at Zubar
Just wanna dance this Fat Tuesday? Zubar's got your hook up there, with three killer DJs joining forces and the bar offering $3 wells and premium drafts.
