Catch a Classic Flick at a Classic Theater.
All work and no play can make you a dull girl or boy. So head out tonight for some fun after your work day comes to an end.
You've got plenty of options at your disposal this evening, that's for sure. For instance, Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining is playing at the Texas Theater. There's also a beer-brewing lesson in Haltom City, some blues rock at Sundown, and some North Texas maestros at the Kessler Theater.
So get on out there! Plus, the weekend really starts on Thursday, anyway.
The Shining at The Texas Theater
Here comes Johnny — right on over to The Texas Theater. This classic horror-thriller from 1980 will be shown in 35mm at this show, which is the ideal viewing for any anti-digital film aficionado. As you no doubt know, the Texas Theater is the last theater in North Texas to show film — period — and it's also the place that Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested after he “assassinated” JFK. So much history here. Oh, and fun fact about Stanley Kubrick, who directed this Stephen King adaptation: Of his 13 feature films, only two are not adapted from a piece of fiction (1955's Killer's Kiss and 1953's Fear & Desire).
Quaker City Night Hawks at Sundown
The Quaker City Night Hawks are bred deep in the heart of Texas ideals. It's like their southern blues boogie rock was slathered in barbecue sauce and chased down with a Lonestar. They've even taken their North Texas swagger to Hollywood: Their songs “Cold Blues” and “Ain't No Kid” were featured on Sons of Anarchy earlier this year. Consider this show an appetizer for their new album, Honcho, which arrives February 15.

Some of the revered past projects these rooted-in-Dallas-music dudes have been involved in include: Ten Hands, a Denton funk band from the '80s; pioneering hip-hop outfit Decadent Dub Team; and Harvin's art rock group Rubber Bullet. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The two also performed together at the Kessler back in 2010. Must've been a good pairing if they're bringing it back, right?
Beer Brewing Lessons at Texas Brewing Inc.
Beer is tasty, ain't it? You can learn to brew it if for only $20 at Texas Brewing Inc. in Haltom City from 5:30 to 8:00 this evening. Go ahead and get your bootlegger on.
Whiskey Folk Ramblers, Kentucky Knife Fight and Madison King at the Double Wide
Kentucky Knife Fight isn't quite the erratic hillbilly battle it sounds like. The band's members hail from St. Louis, and, far as we know, they have all of their teeth. Check their teeth out for yourselves tonight at the Double Wide as they perform alongside two local country-tinged favorites, Whiskey Folk Ramblers and Madison King Band.
