Take a Chance on Mamma Mia! at Fair Park
Is it just me or is Wednesday wholly unappreciated? Like that middle brother who wasn't good at sports or math but was amazing at cataloguing different species of spiders, Wednesday has its own special charm that is a little outside the mainstream.
Tonight, you can capture some of that charm for yourself while seeing indie act Margot and the Nuclear So and So's at Trees. Or you can get a little more energetic with J. Charles & The Trainrobbers at Renfields Corner. If you're into good deeds — now is not the time for humility! — you can put your money to work at Cocktails for a Cause or at a screening for pro-LGBT documentary Out of the Silence. If all else fails, you can always take a chance on the popular ABBA musical Mamma Mia! at Fair Park Tonight.

Margot and the Nuclear So and So's latest album, Rot Gut, Domestic, is the kind of quirky and precious record you'd expect from the charming group. Well, it's as precious as an album with the song “A Journalist Falls in Love with Death Row Inmate 16” can be, at least.
Out of the Silence at Angelika
For those familiar with Dan Savage's popular It Gets Better project that helps assure gay teens that there is a life outside of the ostracism that they are familiar with, Out of the Silence will be familiar territory. Filmmaker Joe Wilson meets with a small-town teen struggling with his sexuality and the condemnation of his classmates in this critically lauded documentary. All of the proceeds of the screening benefit Equality Texas, a pro-LGBT lobbying organization.
Cocktails for a Cause at La Grange
As if you didn't already have enough of a reason to start drinking on a Wednesday, La Grange is hosting Cocktails for a Cause, which is exactly what it sounds like. Raising money for international orphanages, the event will include music by locals Duette and Twisted Optiks, as well as a comedic performance by the oddly named “Zhangster.”
Mamma Mia! at Fair Park
Everyone knows of the hit Broadway musical by now, thanks in part to the film version featuring a charming Meryl Streep and an earache-inducing Pierce Brosnan. The music of ABBA, though, will never die, and there's no better way to celebrate the groundbreaking band than by watching their musical hit.
J. Charles and the Trainrobbers at Renfield's Corner
Dallas' own J. Charles and the Trainrobbers are pretty busy, with an album expected at the end of the month and a Kickstarter campaign underway. This is an interesting time in this band's career, so be sure not to miss them.
Twin Peaks National Bikini Contest at Palladium Ballroom
Hey, this is still a thing! Twenty of the nation's top bikini-wearers will get in a room and all wear bikinis together. Watch them “compete” for the “title” of best bikini inhabitant. The event is all ages, so take your nephew to the show and teach him the definition of “male gaze.” Personally, I'll be waiting for Twin Peaks Annual Slanket wearing competition, as I'm a shoo-in.
