Because Spider-Man Really Needed A Reboot.

Don't call the latest sneak peak of The Amazing Spider-Man a trailer, you guys.

Very clearly, everywhere you look, it's being called a “super preview.” Which, OK, explains the super-long, four-minute run-time for this latest teaser offering.

Also, giving it such a lofty name provided the people behind NBC Universal an excuse to run this thing across all of its networks (NBC, Bravo, E!, USA, etc.) on Monday night. So, y'know, there's that.

But then there's the inherent problem with a trailer super-preview that runs so long — a problem trailers half the length of this one are often face with. That problem is this: How can you show so much of the movie — enough to make it look like it's worth watching in full — without giving away the entire thing? You can't, really.

And, superpowers be damned, neither can The Amazing Spider-Man.

As such, we get a few major reveals in this super-preview. For starters, the new Peter Parker (played by The Social Network's Andrew Garfield) doesn't really mind taking his mask off during his battles. Second: Parker's got some extra-serious daddy issues this time around. Third: Hey, C. Thomas Howell's in this! Fourth: Spidey's kind of a dick, huh?

Tobey Maguire's Parker was kind of a goof. He was uncool and aware of that fact. Garfield's Parker almost immediately seems suaver, more sure of himself. Hence the bit in the preview where Parker acts like a jerk and shots his webbing at the poor criminal who only carries a pocketknife.

Spider-Man, at its core, has always been a coming of age story. But this preview mostly makes it looks like Parker's gonna turn into a dick, right? Right.

Maguire, almost certainly, played this part better.

Maybe those comparisons are unfair. Garfield probably deserves a fairer shake. And he'll probably get one when the movie finally comes out.

But, for now, it stays. Sorry, Hollywood, but you reap what you sow when you launch a reboot of a franchise that itself only launched 10 years ago.
