Suck The Head At The Grapevine Bar's Annual Crawfish Boil.
We always heard growing up that eating too many sweets before dinner would ruin our appetites, but we always subscribed more to the belief that eating too much dinner would make us too full for dessert. Which is probably why we have no qualms whatsoever about heading over to that vegan bake sale over at Beauty Bar at noon before making our way to The Grapevine Bar's crawfish boil later in the afternoon. Also: Deer Tick, The Meat Puppets, and a free show at the Granada Theater make for some pretty decent post-noshing concert options as well.
Deer Tick at The Loft
You would never guess Deer Tick hailed from Rhode Island — partly because they seem to perform in town every few months, and partly because their take on alt-country is so damn convincing. Local heavyweights Telegraph Canyon and Tennessee garage rockers Turbo Fruits fill out this slightly odd, yet really stacked bill.
Meat Puppets at Dan's Silverleaf
Folks fall into two pretty distinct camps when it comes to the continuing career of the Meat Puppets. There are those who cite that beyond influencing Nirvana and Pavement they really haven't done much. And, sure, their only really big hit was 1994's “Backwater” and their biggest moment in the limelight — playing a handful of their tunes with Nirvana during that group's MTV Unplugged taping — wasn't even their own. But we fall into that other camp.
Dallas' Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale at Beauty Bar
The Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale, celebrated globally this week, aims to introduce carnivores to the concept of veganism in a fun/non-threatening way, to show just how delicious vegan baked goods can actually be, and to raise money for local charities. The Dallas branch of the event starts up at The Beauty Bar at noon and will benefit United Farm Workers.
Suckfest 13 at The Grapevine Bar
A $20 donation to the DPD scholarship fund gets you access to The Grapevine Bar's annual crawfish boil, Suckfest 13, which kicks off at 1 p.m.. But with all the free BBQ and crawfish you can eat and access to $1 liquor drinks and Jello shots, you'll more than get your money's worth.
The King Bucks at Granada Theater
Reckless Kelly had to back out of their scheduled performance at the Granada tonight, but the show will go one, as scheduled openers the King Buck become the headliners. Oh, and to make up for the lack of Reckless Kelly on this bill, this sucker's now free to attend.
Botcon at Hyatt Regency Dallas
Grab some of those old Transformers action figures you've still got laying around and take them out to the Hyatt Regency to get autographed by Optimus Prime — or at least by Peter Cullen who voices Prime — at this year's Botcon. No, seriously.
Bicycle Fashion Show at Continental Lofts Gallery
The $10 cover (part of which will be donated to local bike charity Pedal Power) will get you into this event that will feature free blue agave tastings, beer from Deep Ellum Brewing Co., and the ability to test ride some new bicycles. At 10 p.m., professional stylists will style out cyclists. (311 Elm St.)
