How To Make The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich.
Today, we celebrate a very important day: National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. We're dead serious about celebrating today as a real holiday, too. Though the sandwich only contains three ingredients — bread, butter and cheese — it's possibly the most sought-after sandwich in America.
Interestingly enough, though, it actually originates from the French recipe for croque monsieur — grilled ham and cheese — but we, as Americans, took the recipe and changed it to our own liking. Of course we did. The concept is the same, but we took the meat off and added a top piece of bread. And the world's been loving it every since. Why not, right? Grilled cheese sandwiches are so versatile. From the ingredients to the way it's cooked to the accompaniments you can pair it with, a grilled cheese sandwich with American cheese pan fried between two slices of buttered white bread is for sure a classic.
And there is only one way to make The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Here's how.
Ingredients: Two slices of white bread; a slice each of cheddar, American, swiss and monterrey jack cheese; and two tablespoons softened butter.
Directions:
1. Soften 1 tablespoon of butter in the microwave for about 15 seconds.
2. Place all 4 slices of cheese in between the 2 bread slices. Microwave for about 30 seconds to ensure that your cheese melts thoroughly when you grill the sandwich.
3. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat in frying pan.
4. Place sandwich into pan.
5. Spread previously softened butter on your up-facing bread slice.
6. Let grill about 30 seconds
7. Flip.
8. Continue to flip as needed until both sides are golden brown.
9. Remove from pan.
If you're not into making your own grilled cheese sandwich to celebrate this wondrous day, no worries: There are tons of places in Dallas that serve a mean grilled cheese sandwich, including The Porch, Cafe Brazil, AllGood Cafe, Highland Park Pharmacy and The Libertine Bar, just to name a few. Oh and, Norma's Cafe in Oak Cliff is serving grilled cheese sandwiches all day for free. Yes, for free. You read that right.
