Childish Gambino Proves Himself At The Palladium
Lovers of both music and the arts should be all set this weekend as the big arts fest in Deep Ellum is likely provide more than enough of both for anyone to handle. But if that isn't enough there's also a second music and arts fest going on tonight in Oak Cliff. Meanwhile, there's a chance to do some good in the world while taking in a performance at the Four Seasons. And the Childish Gambino/Danny Brown bill over at The Palladium should be a crowd pleaser. Lastly, for those looking to venture outside the city limits, a Daniel Tosh stand-up routine in Grand Prairie and The Phuss' CD release show in Fort Worth are pretty good options on that front.
Deep Ellum Arts Festival
This afternoon continues the 18th annual Deep Ellum Arts Festival, which features over 100 bands performing across five stages and some 200 visual artists putting their work on display. There will also be food vendors, duh.
Childish Gambino at Palladium Ballroom
Unlike the last time Donald Glover came through town, it doesn't appear that he will be doing any stand-up this time around. He's always seemed to want his Childish Gambino project to stand on its own merits — even going so far as to name his mixtapes I Am Just a Rapper — and it appears that, with the release of his full-length CAMP, he's finally starting to be taken seriously as an emcee. Danny Brown, one of the most talked about performers at this year's 35 Denton festival, is slated to open the show.
Go West Fest at The Nest
It reads like a scaled-down version of the Deep Ellum Arts Fest, with 10 bands and 10 local artists participating in the all-day art and music show. Taking place in the warehouse space known as The Nest (425 Bedford St), it sounds more to us like the best reason yet to drive across Large Marge.
Daniel Tosh at Verizon Theatre
Bummed that Donald Glover is opting to focus more on his rap career this trip through town? Comedian Daniel Tosh should more than make up for the laughs tonight in Grand Prairie. While his live show isn't quite as tailored to the lowest common denominator as his television show Tosh.0 is, it is somehow even raunchier.
Egypt Cancer Benefit at the Four Seasons
Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to sit down with Waleed Rashed, the 28-year-old, Nobel Peace Prize-nominated Egyptian who was largely responsible for sparking last year's Egyptian revolution thanks to his work in organizing protests with his fellow revolutionaries through Facebook. We'll have more on our meeting with him for next week, but you might get the chance to meet this inspiring young man tonight out in Irving at the Four Seasons, where $50 gets you in for a dinner, a speech and a performance of traditional Egyptian music — all aimed at benefiting a cancer-focused children's hospital back in Rashed's home country.
The Oyster Princess at Texas Theatre
As far as silent films go, we hear The Oyster Princess is a pretty envelope-pushing, madcap affair to begin with. Throw in the live soundtrack provided by Austin oddballs Bee vs Moth and the whole thing becomes a pretty trippy affair.
The Phuss CD Release Show at Lola's
After playing a few shows with The Toadies earlier this week, The Phuss are having the release show for their new, self-titled, Vaden Todd Lewis-produced full-length tonight in Fort Worth. The House Harkonnen, Descender and Great White Buffalo make this a pretty quality lineup of heavy local talent.
