On Sunday, The Splendor of Nick Cave's “Heard” Turned The Arts District On Its Head.
On Sunday afternoon, acclaimed sculptor, choreographer, costume designer and current University of North Texas artist-in-residence Nick Cave (no, not that one) unveiled his “Heard” display at the Arts District's Nasher Sculpture Center with a full-on performance in the Center's garden and out on Flora Street.
It was indeed a sight to be seen, as dozens of UNT dancers, costumed in flailing horse and playful humanoid get-ups danced around and dazzled the crowds, set to the sounds of a UNT percussion line.
On the one hand, it was a brilliant metaphor of acceptance, as the dancers, initially conjoined in two-person horse costumes split into the humanoids and singular horse characters and segregated themselves from one another before mingling and twirling in conjunction. On the other hand, though, it was just a delight, as these puppet-like creatures bandied about. It was kind of adorable.
