Much has been written about how local billionaire Mark Cuban stepped in at the last minute and ponied up the cash to save the once in-doubt Greenville Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade this year.
Well, now we have another. Sorry, but it's one of the biggest, drunkest and best all-day parties of the year, and we're happy that Cubes saved one of the city's most noted events.
Besides the one big to-do over on Greenville Avenue — with its post-parade block party and the concert headlined by Ryan Bingham, too — there are plenty of other parties all over town. And for those not quite into the whole St. Patrick's Day thing, there's a quite massive show going on out in Grand Prairie, and a weekend-long sci-fi convention as well.
Greenville Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade
Over the past 33 years, the Greenville Avenue parade and block party has become the signature St. Patrick's Day event in the region's signature celebration. This year, the events line up with the actual holiday, so we'd expect things to be extra debaucherous, if that is even possible.
West Village St. Patrick's Day Block Party
After hitting up the Greenville Avenue parade, you might want to head to a slightly less-crowded, but just as happening block party. There are still plenty of bars in West Village to hop to, including the newly opened Union Bear, to find all the green beer and drink specials one could ask for.
South By So What at Quick Trip Park
For folks who realize how overrated green beer actually is — or even those who aren't into the whole block party thing — Third String Productions has assembled a colossal music fest out at QuickTrip Park in Grand Prairie. Asking Alexandria, We Came as Romans, A Skylit Drive, Motion City Soundtrack, and Comeback Kid are among the 60-plus bands who will be performing on SBSW's three stages throughout the all-day event.
All-Con at Crowne Plaza North Dallas Addison Hotel
The theme for this year's All-Con sci-fi convention is, appropriately enough, “End of the World.” If the Mayans were in fact right, then this could be the last time you'll have a chance to attend apocalypse ball, a Ms. Star Wars pageant, or any of the dozens of other activities planned for this weekend's convention.
Band of Skulls at Granada Theater
The English trio crank out gritty blues-tinged indie much in the vein of the Black Keys or the Kills. After an early evening nap, their thundery tunes should prove to be just the ticket to wake yourself back up for round two of the St. Paddy's Day drink-a-thon.
