Fried Jambalaya, Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll Win Top Honors at State Fair's Big Tex Choice Awards

Most everyone loves Labor Day. Rightfully so: For most of us, it means a day off from work and a long weekend to boot. But, for the State Fair of Texas Big Tex Choice Awards finalists, Labor Day is very much a work day.

Actually, it's much more than that. For these folks, today might as well be the Super Bowl.

At 9 o'clock this morning, the eight finalists for the eighth annual fried food competition gathered at Fair Park, allowing judges, media types and fried food obsessives the chance to sample, critique and, eventually, honor their deep-fried delights. They cooked their treats on site, and with considerable pressure on their shoulders: Two of the eight finalists would walk away from the competition with eight a Best Taste or Most Creative title to their name.

Once the dishes were prepared, the judges traveled from offering to offering, spending about four minutes tasting, discussing and scoring each item. Within 35 minutes, all entries had been tasted and all score sheets had been been submitted.

It was much longer before the anticipated results of that judging was revealed. Deservedly, the judges chose to award the Deep Fried Jambalaya entry the Best Taste title and bestow the Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll option with the Most Creative title. Both were nothing short of decadent.

Personally, though, I'd have gone a different route than the judges. Of all the entrants, my favorite was the Fried Pork Wing, with the Picnic on a Stick (a deep-fried chicken, tater tots and pickle kabob) coming in a close second. Those two were just crazy good.

Or maybe just crazy? Listen: We know that these foods are rather off-the-wall. That's the fun of the Big Tex Choice Awards, though.

But, hey, if none of the finalist foods sound appealing to you, the good news is that you have options when it comes to eating at the Fair.

In addition to announcing this year's fried food champions, the State Fair also announced this morning the newest additions to their food menu.

Here are some more of the non-finalist fried items you can try this 2012 season: Cup of Trash (basically a Sloppy Joe); Deep Fried Baked Potato; Deep Fried Chicken and Waffle; Deep Fried Red Velvet Cupcake; El Dogito On a Stick (sausage, cheese and jalapenos); Fried Cotton Candy; Fried Cow Patty (chocolate cake batter and other chocolates combined); Fried Sugar; Fried Sugar Cubes; Shrimp Quesadillas; West Texas Fried Apple Pie; Potato Twist; Pulled Pork Sliders; Chocolate Candy-Coated Bacon; Fried Kitty Kats (Kit-Kat bars).
