Flash Back to the '70s With Todd Rundgren at the House of Blues.

By Cory on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 7:30 AM

There's lots going on tonight, you guys. SMU kicks off their campus' fashion week tonight with a fashion bash at Tootsies (keep checking back here for updates on what they have planned throughout the rest of the week); there's an upscale food tasting over at Southfork Ranch, which will lead nicely into this coming weekend's Savor Dallas events; the guy Neon Indian may owe most of its success to comes to the House of Blues; and, of course, a buzz band comes to Dan's Silverleaf in Denton.

Fashion Week at SMU
As part of their annual fashion week, SMU will have several speakers, trunk shows and other fashion events on campus throughout the week. Tonight, they kick things off with a fashion bash at Tootsies on Preston Road, which will feature a spring trend presentation.

Art exhibitions all over town
From the in-case-you-missed-it department: Four new art exhibitions opened last Thursday, three of which feature some of the city's top artists. Although Bruce Lee Webb, Tony Bones, and Clint Scism won't necessarily be on hand to discuss their pieces like they were on Thursday, there will still be plenty of great local art to view and purchase on hand.

Todd Rundgren at House of Blues
One of the many things the '70s have on us is the amount of live music-based television programming they aired, such as Midnight Special, The Old Grey Whistle Test, and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert just to name a few. One of our favorite appearances on these shows was Todd Rundgren performing Hello "It's Me" on a '73 episode of Midnight Special. Just try to ignore the feathers he has glued to his eyelashes and remember that Neon Indian sampled two of Rundgren's tracks for 2009's Psychic Chasms.

Taste of Elegance at Southfork Ranch
In this "Taste Of"-style event, attendees get to sample fare from some of the city's finest upscale establishments, including Chamberlain's, The Capital Grille, Half Shells, Bavarian Grill, Seasons 52, Brio's Tuscan Grille, Red's Patio Grill, Roy's, Yao Fuzi, Zanata and Ziziki's.

Perfume Genius at Dan's Silverleaf
Denton certainly seems to be on a nice upswing of late, thanks to 35 Denton and a couple of nice post-fest shows, including tonight's offering at Dan's Silverleaf featuring Seattle-based solo artist Perfume Genius. The piano-based offerings of the man born Mike Hadreas are beautiful, somber and not just a little bone-chilling thanks to their subversive lyrical content -- perhaps best displayed by his new release, Put Your Back N 2 It, which finds its lyrics cribbed directly from Hadreas' post-rehab diaries. The new disc is getting plenty of attention, although, to be honest, we prefer 2010's Learning, which features songs Hadreas actually wrote in his treatment facility.
